Introduction

Published in 2024, Read Write Own: Building the Next Era of the Internet by Chris Dixon provides a compelling vision of the future shaped by blockchain technology and the rise of Web3. As a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz and a seasoned entrepreneur, Dixon draws on his deep experience in the tech industry to explore how the internet has evolved from the early days of Web 1.0 to the centralized platforms of Web 2.0, and now to the decentralized possibilities of Web3. At the heart of Dixon’s vision is the idea that blockchain technology will shift power from centralized entities back to individuals, enabling true digital ownership and fostering innovation across various sectors. As Dixon outlines the transformative potential of Web3, Codatta emerges as a real-world example of how these principles can be put into practice.

Codatta, a universal annotation and labeling platform, aligns perfectly with the ethos of Read Write Own. Our mission is to lower the barriers to AI development by providing access to high-quality, user-contributed data. In the spirit of Web3, Codatta empowers individuals to turn their intelligence into AI, contributing to the creation of decentralized and equitable data ecosystems. By enabling users to own and benefit from the data they generate, Codatta is fulfilling the vision of a more inclusive and transparent internet, where everyone has a stake in the digital future.

Summary of Read Write Own

Dixon traces the evolution of the internet from Web 1.0 through Web 2.0, highlighting the limitations and centralization issues that have arisen, particularly concerning data ownership and privacy. He introduces Web3 as the solution to these challenges, detailing how blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and smart contracts can decentralize power and return control to users.

The book delves into the fundamental technologies underpinning Web3, explaining complex concepts like consensus mechanisms, tokenomics, and decentralized finance (DeFi) through clear and practical examples. Dixon showcases various real-world applications across industries such as finance, healthcare, and supply chain, illustrating the broad impact and potential of decentralized technologies.

Addressing current challenges, Dixon discusses issues related to scalability, regulation, and user experience, advocating for focused infrastructure and application development. He envisions a future where Web3 technologies have seamlessly integrated into everyday life, enhancing social interactions and financial systems while mitigating challenges faced by existing technologies like AI. The book concludes with a call to action for innovators and policymakers to collaborate in realizing the full potential of a decentralized internet.

Critical Evaluation

Strengths

  • Comprehensive overview: Read Write Own offers a comprehensive overview of the blockchain industry, providing a detailed history and background. It effectively explains the evolution of blockchain technology, its underlying principles, and its potential to transform various sectors. The book also delves into the economic implications of blockchain, the concept of digital ownership, and the future integration of blockchain with other emerging technologies like AI. I would recommend this book to a friend who comes to me and says, “so tell me a little bit more about Web3 then.”
  • Practical examples and clear explanation: Dixon always starts a concept or topic with its history or with a real-life example, making the concept or topic not so strange or distant. For example, when he tries to envision the future of blockchain networks at the beginning of part five, the development of PCs is laid out to justify the statement: it takes a while, maybe decades, for a concept to develop and grow. Through clear explanations and practical insights, this book makes complex concepts accessible and highlights the transformative potential of decentralized networks.
  • Connection with everyday life: This book is a good reminder that blockchain networks connect with our lives in many meaningful ways. Before, I have heard conversations now and then about Bitcoin or token, but never thought they would actually mean anything close to daily life. Yet this book mentions so many aspects of life that blockchain might have strong influences on:
  1. Digital ownership and personal data
  2. Transparency and trust in transactions, communication, and collaboration
  3. Opportunities for financial activities

Areas for Improvement

  • Elaboration on limitations and challenges: Just like I’m curious about what tokenomics really means, I also wonder about the challenges of token market regulations. It would be very helpful if Dixon could be more specific about some of the limitations and challenges that the blockchain industry is facing. Some might even argue that this book underplays significant hurdles such as policy and regulation limitations.
  • Economic analysis: Blockchain is affecting many aspects of economic development, such as economic policies, job displacement and social welfare, and market demand and supply (of tokens). It would be really helpful if the author could dig deeper into these topics.
  • Integration with current (often centralized) systems and infrastructures: It is good to know that existing AI systems have limitations, and blockchain might be the solution to some of them. However, today we also see more integration between the two, such as AI model training and distributed computing.
